MY RESPONSE TO THE THEME
WONDERING ABOUT THE WORD ‘WONDER’…
The word ‘WONDER’ is an emotion that creates feelings of amazement, imagination, admiration and investigation. But all feelings are triggered by something aren’t they? So what exactly provokes the emotion of wonder…?
UNFAMILIARITY BEAUTY CURIOSITY MARVEL DOUBT AMAZEMENT
All emotions and triggered by a number of feelings and it is my belief that the above feelings all spur towards the creation of the emotion WONDER. When thinking about creating my OWN device of wonder, I want to involve all of the above feelings and use them as a tool to ignite an individual’s journey to experience the emotion wonder.
But how exactly will I do this? What excites individuals today? What do we all enjoy doing? What will my device be? How will I achieve the desired outcome?
CONTEXTUALISATION OF THE PROJECT IN RELATION TO MEDIA ARTS WORKS
In relation to the media arts, the emotion of ‘WONDER’ and the experiences that come with it all encourage individuals to investigate, participate, interact and explore. Below are some examples of interactive art pieces that have inspired MY OWN wondrous experiences, in turn triggering the creative thinking for the construction of my own ‘DEVICE OF WONDER.’
wow… check these out
Nam June Paik’s was one of the first ever artists to experiment with television and video, focusing on turning popular media into art. In “TV Buddha”, his use of electronic media as a visionary artist, stating that ‘the future is now,’ inspired my thoughts when deciding on my device of wonder, sparking my interest in futurustic-looking television. When looking at Daniel Rozin’s installation “Peg Mirror,” I was intrigued by how through the use of just circular wooden pieces and a small central camera, he was able to capture the attention of many individuals, with their reflections being reflected on the surface. Combining both “TV Buddha” and “Peg Mirror” I wanted to create a platform in which individuals could become involved with and experience my art, with attention on behaviour and interaction. In relation to the MaKey MaKey, I wish to contribute this into my device of wonder as it is the perfect tool in encouraging individuals to interact with everyday objects as a replacement for the typical keyboard.
NOW ITS TIME FOR ME TO PITCH MY IDEA 🙂
MY DEVICE OF WONDER = INTERACTIVE FILM
OUTCOMES OF MY PROTOTYPE
For my own DEVICE OF WONDER I wish to collaborate all of the above to creative an interactive film in which an individual is placed in a room alone, only accompanied by a TV and a makey makey.
Here’s a drawing to explain it better!
WHAT EXACTLY IS MY IDEA AND HOW WILL IT WORK?
The general concept for my video is based on an interactive movie. For all of you thinking… what is that and how does it work?… Basically I will present a series of videos to the individual in the form of a video game — the gameplay will be live-action footage that I have recorded. Focusing on story and presentation, each video will continue after the next. But here’s where it gets exciting!!! At the end of each video, the individual will be presented with two possible scenarios which will determine which video will play next. Watch the video below I found on YouTube for a rough idea of how the experience will unfold.
THE MAKEY MAKEY
You may be wondering… how exactly will I be involving the makey makey with the interactive film… HERE IS HOW!!! The makey makey itself will act as the controller that allows the individual participating in the gameplay to choose the path they wish to go on. With the makey makey, I will construct MY OWN makey makey controller that will engage the individual and encourage them to participate!!
here are some pictures that will inspire me in the construction of my makey makey controller
AUDIENCE’S EXPERIENCE 🙂
The AUDIENCE is extremely essential for my device of wonder, as it heavily relies on INTERACTIVITY to achieve it’s desired outcome. Today, new communication technologies and new kinds of audiences and audience research have transformed the expectations of performance. The main concern for me in regards to the audience’s experience is that I want to ensure they are having fun and enjoying the experience. To ensure this I want to make sure the audience feels comfortable, like they’re experiencing the game as if they were playing it in their own lounge room. To achieve this, I’m going to set up my chosen area as if it were my own lounge room – surrounded by artwork, skateboards, DVDs, snacks and other typical items you find at home. By doing this, I hope to relax the audience and excite them to participate in my art.
SOME FEEDBACK FROM MY PEERS AND TUTOR
- Creation of living room space – MAKE IT FUN
- Focus on novelty when constructing my own MaKey MaKey – BE CREATIVE
- Shot ideas for video – INTENSE AND ACTION-PACKED FOOTAGE
FURTHER WORK TO BE DONE
- Working storyboard and shot list for video
- Construction of MaKey MaKey controller
(both of which will be posted on this blog shortly, stay tuned) 🙂
